Print and Production
Objects of wonder is an exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. I was tasked with hand making a catalog, a secondary publication, ephemera, donation card, and a package to contain all of it. My catalog is designed with interactive, irregular shaped pages with large photos and maps that unfold out of the book. It is aimed to appeal towards younger audiences interested in natural history, the box is designed as "junior scientist/explorer research kit." I have included a field guide as a second publication, a sticker book, a keychain, and a bag of crystals. The field guide icludes space for children's own findings, fast facts, diagrams, vocabulary, and coloring pages. The box itself can be used to store their very own objects of wonder.
I created a rigid box with a magnetic closure, lined with iridescent vinyl. I believe the irridescent foling on the front of the box would catch a child's interest and imagination. My design combines large, bold, sans serif typeface with thin lines and circular forms for a modern look, to emphasize the scientific content contained within it. Each item included has an individual tray in the box so everything fits snugly together. The the box has a false bottom, where the catalog sits on a tray equipped with a ribbon for easy removal. Interactive pages and large colorful photos keep children entertained and having fun while learning.
Type combinations include Forma DJR Banner for headings, Monaco for subheadings, and Franklin Gothic for body text.
